Everyone loves to travel. The only difference is that for several people, travelling is not a hobby – it is rather, a way of life. And because they are passionate travellers, they take quite a lot of trips. As a result, more often than not, they are on a tight budget. Everything depends on that – specially whether to go international or national.
While virtual travel is always a convenient option if you want to travel on a budget, going to a destination in person has its own charm. No matter what continent, there are always places you can visit on a budget – even countries we think of as expensive are quite budget-friendly if you know certain tips and tricks.
The splendour of expensive destinations has its appeal, but let’s face it — the more expensive a place is, the more you have to adjust the length of your trip and your activities there to stretch your buck. That being said, international travel has its share of thrill, delight and most importantly, a lot of myth. One of it being that traveling abroad is super expensive; but it doesn’t have to be.
It all actually depends on the country you choose. One can easily travel in a foreign country in the same budget you would need for a destination within our own country. Yes, it requires thorough research, smart planning, advance booking and an adventurous soul ready to face all challenges and this is actually the fun part!
So, to that effect, let’s take a look at some of the cheapest holiday destinations around the world.
1. Nepal
Nestled amidst the high and mighty Himalayas, Nepal is a beautiful country of snow peaks and streams, yaks and yetis, monasteries and magic. Nepal offers the calm and serene atmosphere for anyone who wants to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city life, and for the adventure junkies it is the perfect location to experience an adrenaline rush – and all without burning a hole in the pocket.
2. Thailand
Let’s face it – you expected Thailand to be on this list, didn’t you? There’s a reason why Thailand remains so popular with backpackers – it’s got idyllic islands, a rich culture, beach-huts aplenty, tantalizing cuisine and adventures galore, and all available at often staggeringly low prices. Despite the well-trodden routes through the country, it’s not hard to get away from the crowds.
3. Romania
Whatever you think Romania is, it probably isn’t. The spectacular Transylvania region, in particular, defies expectations – with its cute medieval towns, ancient fortified churches, and spectacular Carpathian mountain range. It’s actually one of my favorite destinations in Europe. Romania is one of Europe’s best-kept travel secret, so keep your misconceptions at home and enjoy the journey!
4. Cambodia
While all of Southeast Asia region could fit on this list, Cambodia is one of the best destinations – it’s affordable, beautiful, and the locals are incredibly hospitable. It’s way cheaper than all its neighbours, just as beautiful, and filled with some of the nicest people in the world. It is also one of the cheapest backpacking destinations in the world!
5. Nicaragua
The largest country in Central America, Nicaragua is known for untouched beaches, wild Pacific waves, beautifully preserved towns, no fewer than 19 volcanoes, and idyllic islands galore. Much of the country’s 550 miles of coastline is delightfully quiet even at the height of global travel and, with the calm Caribbean to the east and the surf waves of the Pacific to the west, there’s something to suit every type of beach dweller. But there’s plenty to see beyond the pristine sandy stretches.
6. Vietnam
Despite a remarkable rate of change over the decades since the end of the American War, Vietnam remains amazing value for Western visitors. The country’s greatest attraction is its sublime countryside, from the limestone karsts of the north to the waterways and paddy fields of the Mekong Delta, with blissful beaches and frenetic cities crammed in between. Then there’s the cuisine – pull up a stool at a pho stall and for only a couple of dollars you’ll eating some of the best food on offer, shoulder to shoulder with the locals.
7. Cape Verde
Cape Verde should be labelled a ‘hidden gem’. You may not have heard of this small archipelago off the coast of Africa, but it’s such an incredible country to explore. Its location and climate make it an especially great winter escape for Europeans. The island of Sal is known for its inexpensive package holiday resorts, though if it’s culture or nature that you’re after, then it’s truly all about the island of Santo Antao. The landscapes are simply unbelievable!
