Yet another example of celebrities cashing in on their fame to do some bizarre stuff. This time it’s controversial YouTuber and social media sensation Logan Paul and legendary boxer and former champ Floyd Mayweather. Earlier in December 2020, the duo announced that they will fight each other in an exhibition match scheduled to take place on 20 February 2021. The match, which is being called an obvious anti-climax event, is organized by Fanmio Boxing on a pay-per-view (PPV) basis.
Profiles of Paul and Mayweather
Logan Paul, known for doing and recording outlandish stuff and then uploading it on his popular YouTube channel, has a fan following in the millions. Although he is an American, he travels around the world to explore places and record weird events. Over his nearly decade-long vlogging career, Paul has visited places such as Japan, Brazil, and Mexico. He is considered a YouTube sensation and is one of the most successful vloggers in the world, along with the likes of PewDiePie, Vastya, Vlad and Nikita, and Tulio Borgias (Brazil).
Thankfully, he also has a burgeoning boxing career, which started in 2018 when he dueled with British YouTube KSI. They have fought twice, one of which led to a draw and the other with KSI winning on a split decision. The fight with Mayweather is also being seen as a white-collar boxing match as Paul lacks boxing experience, especially when compared with his opponent.
Floyd Mayweather has a world boxing record of 50-0; undefeated and an Olympics champ, he is best known for maintaining his world championship title with Manny Pacquiao, and for fighting Connor McGregor in one of the most viewed fighting matches in the world. Mayweather was named Fighter of the Decade (2010s) by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) and is highly regarded as one of the greatest and the best defensive boxers of all time. His fame comes from the fact that he is the most lucrative PPV attraction of all time, which could signal the reason for this exhibition fight with Paul.
While the announcement came as a real surprise to the fans in both the factions, it has definitely ruffled some weathers in the online world. Twitter erupted with the news after Mayweather tweeted about it. Since then, both the players have been active on social media, promoting the fight. Snoop Dogg basked in the glory when he offered to referee the fight. Boxing fans might remember that Dogg is not new to refereeing, as he had donned the role back in November during Jake Paul’s fight with Nate Robinson.
Some reactions weren’t positive which called out Paul for cashing in on his fame and demeaning qualified boxers. Others called it a joke but the official listing on the Fanmio site suggests otherwise.
How and Where to Watch
The Paul-Mayweather fight is a special exhibition match and is touted to bring in a lot of viewers (and money) from around the world. It is sponsored by Mayweather Promotions, Fanmio, and MAV. At the time of writing, one view cost roughly $24.99. But analysts suggest that the price will go up as the fight approaches, which can also depend on the coronavirus condition in the state. This is because the venue has not yet been decided. The US is currently one of the worst-hit countries from the pandemic, followed by Brazil, India, and Italy. According to the official listing, the price will go up to $69.99 depending upon the number of sales and the fight date.
Fanmio is also selling a limited-edition t-shirt along with the fight ticket, which will cost extra ($30). One can go to the Betboro official website and book a partners seat now to avoid higher prices or unavailability. There’s also a meet-up offer for 20 lucky participants.
Mayweather is returning to the boxing ring after his 2017 fight with McGregor. And Paul is known for doing bizarre stuff, and has a slight advantage of being nearly half as old as his opponent. Emotions will be high and fans will be aplenty as the world is about to see yet another fun-filled, madness-fed boxing match.
